Bullet Journal was developed by Ryder Carroll, an Art Director and Interaction Designer living in Brooklyn, NY. Through many years of trial and error, the system has evolved into the ideas presented here. We see this as an evolving, adaptable platform meant to be shared and self curated as you determine what works best for you. This website, in addition to serving as our thank you to our generous community, is a space where inspiration, organization, and general musings on mindfulness can live and grow with the support of our talented Bullet Journalists.

Good Habits Don't Exist – Do This Instead
It's tempting to think we can automate good behavior - so we do what's good for us without thinking. But what if chasing "good habits" doesn't actually work?
Here's my rule for crafting intentional rituals - that increase your thinking, not reduce it.

How To Make Reflecting In Your Journal A Daily Habit
Another insightfull video. I very much like your personal examples Ryder, it makes the whole idea so much more explicit, easy to understand and aproachable.
This is a refreshing point of view, perfectly timed for me. I am having a month off work after an intense couple of years with one goal in mind, which is now reached. I am now setting up my first bullet journal while pondering my intentions for the years ahead. I need more clarity and am on my way there. Thank you.
So simple the explanation...Thank you. Thank you
great video. thank you
this movie is wonderful
i have a question about collections I can't get where should i put it: in the end of the month for next month or in the starting of new month, or just anywhere??
I appreciate you breaking down each step and explaining your WHY. How lovely to think about the gifts and how you serve your partner with your ritual.
Fantastic video!! I really appreciate that you unpacked the mindfulness of ritual which was not clear to me before and sharing your personal morning routine and the "why" of each step. Really powerful stuff. I've recently focused on being a better friend to myself, a better big sister to myself and shifting that head voice away from criticism to support and encouragement so I am looking forward to your upcoming video that sounds like it may go in a similar direction. Aside: Your calm demeanor and vocal inflections are akin to Bob Ross. Perfection!
I would like to see a morning ritual/workout routine from someone who has an hour commute to a job in the morning. I get up at 5:30 am to get to work/court on time. I listen to a PMA audio as I get ready and check my planner, but that's about all I have time for.
That is such an eye-opening video. Thank you. I struggled with habits a lot but I love my rituals. Now it makes total sense why that is. Having the goal of doing positive things mindlessly is a really strange concept when you think about it. Thank you so much for this fresh perspective!
This earned a re-sub.
In the meditation practice I am learning, you are training your mind to bring attention to where you what it to be: the present moment. Bringing your attention to your breathing happens in the present moment. Thinking will arise, that's what the mind does. Accept that thinking is happening, examine how it is making you feel, then return your attention to the breathing. Sometimes the mind realizes that it doesn't have to think all the time, and it will relax in silence for a rest. This practice helped me realize that I have habits that I want to change. The search for ways to do that led me to Bullet Journaling. Thank you!
Great advice and i agree, in line with what youre saying this is my two reasons. 1. Is this a habit I'm struggling to stick to - holds me accountable and it's rewarding and motivating. Ofc once thats habbit becomes engrained into your routine you can remove it. 2. Is this something I want to improve? For instance supplements, some supplements make me feel terrible .. some do nothing at all. I could be wasting a lot of money on something that doesnt belp me or actually contrubutes to me feeling worse.
Hi Ryder, nice tutorial, thank you. In your latest video I've seen you've added symbols and significants to the BuJo grammar. Ever thought about updating the method book with a new edition?
Yes of course - it's a rather big project that we hope to get to
thank you very much Ryder for this video. is it possible to have subtitles for french people. my english is not very good and i would like to understand all words you said ! thanks . have a good day
Very interesting observation. Very helpful to make this distinction. Good things shouldn't be done mindlessly, be it training or relationships.
This was great
Excellent!
Another awesome video! 🎉❤
💯This is why I love using the Bullet Journal! I use it all!
I always wondered if I was broken because I couldn’t keep habits like everyone else. It all makes so much sense now why the important things that I’ve connected to mindfulness are the ones that stick. This is brilliant.
I’ve been trying to start since reading the book in 2019. Set up a few times but then not used! Kept getting confused with the difference between tasks & events.. & even notes sometimes. THINK this video has helped me get my head around it! We’ll see when I try again tomorrow! Thank you
That's great to know! Sometimes videos just help when you hear it - hope it works out for you
Such a helpful video. Thanks
I love the reminder about the power of ritual. Thank you
I can't give multiple likes, so I'm leaving a comment. 😀 Seriously, I'm just coming out of a highly stressful three weeks, and this was exactly what i needed to hear to start resetting my brain.
Maybe this is what I need to try rather than continually attempting to create good habits. Thank you for sharing.
Where do you write down your intentions?
Hi Ryder, I don't usually write such personal comments, but I must say your methodology resonates with me on a deeply personal level. As an ADHD and autistic person, I've struggled my entire life to find a way to be organised and peaceful. I failed more times than I can count, but I never stopped looking for a way to be organised and still be myself. It all changed in January this year when I came across your bullet journal method and it has absolutely transformed my life. I've just finished reading your book, and with every chapter I read and every video of yours that I watch, I gain new insights. You have truly transformed my life. For instance, habits never really worked for me, no matter how much people swore by them. However, my bullet journal ritual does. Since January, I've shown up to the journal every single day and I've never felt more in control, more mindful and more at peace. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for everything you have put out into the world so far and what you are still offering. For me personally, you are making a world of difference. Thank you. Piotr
I have been doing back and forth to digital planning vs Bullet Journaling ever since I’ve got an iPad and use it as my main computer. My BuJo ritual has been so ingrained in my system that I feel like I can’t replicate it using a digital tool.
I do have to think about my bad habits, I call that my overthinking anxious brain and being a lapse catholic with a tendency to self loath ritual 🥹
I get the message and yet starting and keeping rituals is as hard as forming good habits. Practically speaking they are in the same ballpark for me. I get the theoretical differences but engaging in a ritual kinda habitually is equally as hard.
Anybody can write a book telling people what to do. They’re almost all useless.
What a great video! I've never thought about rituals and habits in this way before and this new insight will definitely help me when I reflect on my current behavior.
This is not the place for your comments.
Excellent observations. Your points made me think about how habits are not very responsive to change, which is a big problem in our everyday changing environment.
I've always thought there was something wrong with me because I couldn't do "habits". But I already DO rituals. It was really helpful to hear you discuss the details of yours. Thank you
The idea of practicing the discomfort of not doing anything is such a good way of putting meditation. Gonna take that intention into my own meditation from now on!
"I don't have to think about watching youtube videos when I'm trying to get things done...' I feel attacked.
I write about what I know lol
Attack.. snack... Aaand I'm already wristdeep into a bag of chips.
Hay
As much as I relate to and find genuine value in this, I hate that I feel like I'm being attacked. 🤣🤣🤣
Ryder, I've been binge watching your videos, which have great content, and I'm learning a ton. Thank you! However, I've noticed--and have been distracted by your more recent videos--where it appears you are lip synching yourself...WHY? It's very distracting for this ADHD gal. To the point I have to "rewind" over and over to get a certain point. If you're having equipment malfunctions, can you just talk over some B roll footage? I have held off saying anything, but maybe am now one of a few willing to give you a heads-up: You're doing your content a disservice...and it pains me to say it. 😔
Learnng how to do reflections has taught me to become a better ‘thinker’, if you will. I find that during my days I think about my life and activities in a new way. I try and see things without judgment but with a clearer mind. In other words rather than rushing along helter skelter ( my usual path) Im reflecting on what I am doing, why and so on. I really like being a part of learning this incredible way to ‘ life scribe”. I am very grateful to BUJO for this method.
Affect a positive attitude. Don’t search for feelings and decide to placate any negativity lurking in thought. It’s about mindset, mindset isn’t just thoughts and feelings but like you say, perspective.
Man you look stoned 😎
I love this more than the OG Daily log method, it combines mood tracking, rapid logging, and live time boxing (in the moment, not pre-planned), and you can identify a lot through this system.
Bro this is so much better than the other guides on the internet that have you drawing all sorts of crap in the journal. Thank you for this!

Thank you so much for this informative video..This made my BuJo journey more effective by improving small things. Thanks a lot..!!
